While it might be the correct move in terms of EV, three to a Royal only fills in about once every 2,162 hands. On a 100-play machine, that’s a 5% chance of a single Royal filling in. EV of 3-to-a-Royal 100-play $0.25 is $160.85; EV of 4-to-a-Flush is $159.58. If you’ve got the bankroll to continually play at $125/pull, then yeah, max EV would be the best strategy… but I’d be broke!

You played that hand wrong. The best play was to hold the 10, Queen and Ace of hearts. You want to try for the royal flush. If you did hit it, you would’ve won $1,000 on maximum coin bet. You should get Bob Dancer’s program called Video Poker for Winners! I have hit nine royal flushes in the past thanks to that video poker training software.

I couldn’t remember if 3 to a Royal beat 4 to a Flush without a penalty card as the fifth card, and so correct play would have been 3 to a Royal… but at that level of play, the risk of zero Royals was too high!
