In playing Texas holdem you always use the best five card combinations. When you declare a hand, certain amounts of card have been used up so there can only be a certain number of kickers. This can be best explained through a series of examples. In the case of the four of a kind, your hand will be a combination of four cards of the same value and one card of different value. The card that is different is your kicker. Therefore, four of a kind has one kicker. For example, your hand is ten diamonds, ten hearts, ten clubs, ten spade and 8 hearts. Eight hearts is the kicker.

With three of a kind, you will have two kickers. It is a combination of three cards of the same value and two cards of different values. For example, your hand is seven hearts, seven clubs, seven spades, king diamonds and five hearts. The king diamonds and the five hearts are your kickers.

In the case of a two pair hand you will have one kicker. For example, your hand is comprised of a pair kings, a pair of tens and an ace. If you’ve ever experienced a night of poker with those Plastic Poker Chips with ridged edges, you know all the nightmares that come along with it. Community cards in Texas holdem are also known as shared cards or window cards which are dealt face up in the center of the table and shared by all players. In these games, each player is dealt privately hole cards, which are then combined with the community cards to make a complete hand. The set of community cards is called the board, and may be dealt in a simple line or arranged in a special pattern. Rules of each game determine how they may be combined with each player’s private hand.

Most community card games do not play well with low ball hand values, though some do play very well at high-low splits especially with ace-five low values, making it possible to win both halves of a pot.

Community cards are so named because everybody else in the game can use them in combination with their hole cards to make the best hand combination. The sequence of showing the community cards and the betting in between adds anticipation to find out how a player’s cards can potentially build up at showdown. The showdown is when remaining players compare hands to win the pot.

After the hole cards are dealt and the first round of betting ends, the flop has the most affect on the game. Three cards are shown facing up and more often than not, the supportive cards will come up then and not at the turn or at the river. This is called the flopped hand term, when the only improvement came from the flop.

The turn and the river have less impact on the game. Building a chip stack in poker tournaments is a multi layered process. During the first hour of No Limit Texas Holdem tournaments you should basically be playing solid poker. Blind stealing is of secondary importance. Come in with speculative hands with high implied odds in Late Position, but otherwise just play solid.

After the first hour or so, tourney play becomes less and less about the cards and more about situations. What you hold is of relatively less importance than how many chips you have in front of you vs. your opponent and the precise stage of the tourney you’re in.

Look for opportunities to set traps, induce bluffs – Don’t just bet your strong hands, check-fold your misses and slow play your monsters. Those betting patterns will get picked up on. Say you have top pair AK on an A86 board with a two flush. You strongly bet the flop and turn (a brick) out of position and get called. River comes another brick, no flush. I would check here in many instances and call a bet. If you bet, you’re not going to get called by the missed draw and you may get raised by a hand that was trapping you with a set or two pair. You may miss a value bet from a player with an inferior Ace who ends up checking behind on the river, but against aggressive players I like to check and let them bluff at it, or save myself some chips by not getting raised when they do have me beat. This kind of bluff inducing is a real stack builder.

When you have position you’ll sometimes get more chips if you check behind on a flop that hits you with something as simple as top pair, fair kicker but has a two flush. Most say bet and “make draws pay”, but when head’s up in a tourney, you can risk a free card as it’s not likely that he has that exact draw. Try to induce the bluff against a hand that missed completely on the next card. Checking and playing passively like this works well against overly aggressive players. Since most of the time when you check, you fold to a bet, they’ll take a check for weakness so you should check behind even only moderately strong hands as well as your monsters. Making draws pay is not nearly as important a concept in your typical HU match up in NLHE as it is in your typical multiway pots in limit ring games. So obviously bet strong if against more than one opponent.

Blind stealing - Once the blinds get to 50/100, then you need to open up and start stealing. As others have suggested, this means just open raising when it gets to you in late-late-middle position with just about anything. Not every time, but enough to at least keep pace. Sometimes you don’t get a lot of chances as there are raises ahead of you by aggressive players. Middle stages is all about stealing so you can’t just wait for cards or you’ll get ground down. You don’t always have to have it folded to you to steal either. Sometimes you’ll get one of those guys who limps too much looking for multiway action. You’ll know he’s doing it with a moderate hand since he’s done it before and check-folded the flop. I often take a “no limping on my button” attitude and will raise any 2 on the button and watch him and the blinds fold and pick up a nice pot.

Firing second barrel – When you do get called by one of the blinds you often have to lay out a good sized bet even if the flop misses you. That can be scary when you were stealing with 75o and the flop comes A8Q, but often that board is just as scary or more so for your opponent. You’ll get him to fold hands like medium pocket pairs in these situations. You pick up even nicer pots when you have the guts to fire out again. And if you get check-raised, easy fold. You have to be careful sometimes and check behind in these situations and just check and fold on the turn as a check raise may cost you too much. You can’t fire out at every single flop as a savvy player is looking to put the big check-raise on you. That, and you want to set up later plays for when you do flop a big hand and induce a turn bet by your foe by checking behind. However, I usually err on the side of firing out on any flop when checked to in these situations.

Try this in your next low buy in tourney as an experiment. Once you’re into the 2nd hour with an above average stack and you’re not in any <10BB all-in or fold mode, try raising every time it’s folded to you on SB, button, CO, CO+1 and even CO+2. Often you’ll find the players behind you to be very tight and passively trying to survive and you’ll pick up tons of blinds. Finally, they catch on to your bullying ways and stop waiting for AK and play back at you with A9o. Hopefully, that’s the time you have AK or a big pair and bust them. One caveat to this experiment: don’t steal with garbage from a stack so short that if he moves in you’re obliged by odds to call. You’re just asking to double them up and you don’t really want to show your stealing hands. And don’t try to bully a LAG guy who has 10X your chips. And don’t do it five times in a row when it’s folded to you on a real tight table…well you get the idea, do it when the situation calls for it.

Semi-bluffing – Another place to get aggressive is semi-bluffing. Don’t call with draws as you might early when getting pot odds, raise with them. This is generally for HU situations, which will be the vast majority of the time. There’s a good chance your opponent is just bluffing at the pot too and missed, so you’ll get a lot of lay downs. And if called, you always have your draw to fall back on.

Blind defense – Another place to get aggressive in the late going is blind defense. You’re seeing it suggested here that you steal with a lot of nothing. Well, others are doing it to you when you’re in the blinds, so you have to make them back off. If you’re just passively giving up your blinds, or calling and folding on the flop often, then you’re just asking for misery. Sometimes you have to play back at the stealer by moving in on them. Sometimes you should do it with some marginal hands, too. Going all-in with 76s is not something you want to do very often, but you have to send a message that you’re not to be F-ed with. If you do make a “backoff” stand with a moderate hand like this, try to do it with a hand where if you’re called, at least your hand is live. So I’d probably rather have 76s than K7o.

Another blind defense tactic is the stop-n-go. Call the steal raisers bet and fire out a good sized bet on any flop. Again, doesn’t matter what your cards are, you’re just hoping the stealer missed and put him on the defensive.

Representing hands - Every once in awhile you want to represent a hand you don’t have and play it like you would if you had that hand. So a club draw on the board and you aint got no clubs. Play it like you made a flush when a third club hits. Again, this is a HU only type play, not for multiway pots and is to be used sparingly. But it’s another way to pick up chips when you don’t have the cards to back them up.

Bluffing in Texas Hold’em poker is the ultimate deception, and is what separates the amateur players from the true pros. Taking down a pot that your opponent should have won is a great feeling. However, you should keep in mind that even if most new players say that bluffing is key to winning at Texas Holdem poker, it’s actually not true. You can be a winner without ever bluffing, but the fact that poker is a game of incomplete information makes it possible to win just by getting you opponents believe that you have the best hand when you don’t. Here are the 10 best bluffing tips that will help you become a master bluffer.

Tip #1: Don’t be scared

Don’t be afraid to bluff when you play live poker because it’s going to show. The art of Texas Hold’em is reading your opponents, and if you aren’t confident enough when throwing out chips on a bluff, there are good chances that you’ll be called out. When you’re trying to bluff, you should look as normal as you do on any situation. Of course, this tip doesn’t apply when you play online since you don’t have to put on your poker face.

Tip #2: Scare your opponents

If you want to bluff, don’t do it passively. If you throw a small bet at a big pot, you will not make other players fold a decent hand. You have to bet agressively, but not so agressively that you will be stuck committing more than you wish to fold away.

Tip #3: Your should bluff after the flop

While it’s possible to bluff pre-flop, most Texas Hold’em players with a good hand won’t likely fold before they see the flop. Only huge pre-flop raises will make your opponents fold a good hand, and if you compete against premium hands like aces or kings, they will probably go all-in against you. However, after the flop comes out, even aces can be kicked out of the pot if the board pops up nasty, which brings us to the next tip.

Tip #4: Analyze the flop and bet accordingly

If the flop doesn’t look too good for premium hands (6-7-8 for instance, or three cards of the same suit), bet like there was no tomorrow. If your opponents call you, they probably have a piece of the draw, but if they have a high pair, or KQ without the flop connecting with their cards, they will likely be scared. Flush and straight draws are the worst enemies of AA’s, so you should turn that into your advantage.

Tip #5: Don’t let pride blow your bankroll

If you throw your chips at a pot twice and keep getting called or raised, never hesitate to fold your hand if you feel your opponents aren’t going to lay down their cards. To bluff successfully, you must learn to read your opponent. If he’s staying in the hand, swallow your pride and get out of the hand before you give away too many chips. I know it’s hard to do, but this will keep you away from trouble.

Tip #6: Give yourself a loose image

If you continually try to bluff your opponents and get caught from time to time, they will try to catch you and make loose calls against you, which will give you a big advantage. If you get a loose and agressive player image, your opponents will overplay their weak hands when you bet you will win a lot of chips in the process. You should always take into account your table position when bluffing. Where Poker Comes From

The origin of poker is the subject of much debate. All claims, and there are many, have been widely disputed by historians and other experts the world over. That said, among the most credible claims are that poker was invented by the Chinese in around 900AD, possibly deriving from the Chinese equivalent of dominos. Another theory is that Poker originated in Persia as the game ‘as nas’, which involved five players and required a special deck of 25-cards with five suits. Cards have tentatively been dated back to Egypt in the 12th and 13th century and still others claim that the came originated in India as Ganifa, but there is little evidence that is conclusive.

In the United States history, the background of poker is much better known and recorded. It emerged in New Orleans, on and around the steamboats that trawled up and down the Mississippi and Ohio rivers. Ante: a forced bet; each player places an equal amount of money or chips into the pot before the deal begins. Rock: very tight player who plays very few hands and only continues to the pot with strong hands.

Split: Divide the pot among two or more players rather than awarding it all to a single player is known as splitting the pot. There are several situations in which this occurs, including ties and in the various games of intentional split-pot poker. Sometimes it is necessary to further split pots; commonly in community card high-low split games such as Omaha Holdem, where one player has the high hand and two or more players have tied low hands.

Three Pair: A Phenomenon of seven card versions of poker, such as seven card stud or Texas Holdem, it is possible for a player to have three pairs, although a player can only play two of them as part of a standard 5-card poker hand. This situation may jokingly be referred to as a player having a hand of three pair.

Under the Gun: The playing position to the direct left of the blinds in Texas Holdem or Omaha; act first on the first round of betting.

So call me a Negative Nelly or whatever they call someone who sees the negative in things, but I cannot ignore the negatives, and to be fair, I shouldn’t. So Let me state up front that this review will have some negative points in it, but let me also state that we did enjoy our cruise and would do it again.

Our first cruises were on the Royal Caribbean Monarch of the Seas and the Carnival Paradise. Both of these ships did cruises out of Los Angeles (Long Beach) to Catalina and Ensenada. Both are smaller ships of their respective lines and are the basis of any comparisons that I made when looking at this cruise. Of course that could be like comparing a SUV to a VW Bug, albeit in the case of the Monarch a classy Bug and in the case of the Paradise a Party Bug!

When we booked this cruise our expectations were a little lower then if we were booking a regular itinerary for a ship because it was a repositioning cruise. It turns out that we should not have had lowered our expectations that much, the cruise ship had its full crew and the entertainment scheduled was for a 7 night cruise while we were on a 5 night cruise, this gave us more entertainment choices not that we needed entertaining since we found ways to entertain ourselves, boy that “Do Not Disturb” sign came in handy.

We arrived for check-in around noon (we wanted to get to the room early, we had not seen each other in a week), which appeared to be a good time as we were able to walk right up to the check-in desk and were promptly handled by one of the agents. A few minutes of verifying paperwork, viewing passports, taking blood (not really) and swiping a credit card (They wanted to keep it but I wouldn’t let them) and we were directed to board the ship. We learned something new on this cruise that we suspected earlier. Arriving early for check-in works to our favor and gets us aboard quickly. Score!

We boarded the ship and headed to the Windjammer Restaurant for the lunch buffet. This was the first of a few disappointments for the cruise. The food for the boarding lunch was dry and bland, kind of like the foods the kids cook at home when it is their turn to cook; compared to the Monarch we were greatly disappointed and hoped that it was not the norm for this Windjammer. Unfortunately this did prove to be the norm for the Windjammer on this cruise but a glass of lemonade improved things some and gave it a tangy taste. Every time we ate in the Windjammer we found the food to be dry and relatively bland, I looked around the restaurant and peeked into the kitchen but I didn’t see my kids working, there were a few dishes that broke the pattern but not many.

When the staterooms were available we visited our stateroom and while we had an interior cabin the layout of the room made it feel larger then our previous visits to the Monarch (They say that shaving makes things appear bigger). Our stateroom was set up with the beds together in the queen configuration, which pleased us since we did not need to request it. Additionally our Crown and Anchor books and the Terry Robes that were part of our reservation bonus were in the room waiting for us. One disappointment here was that we did not see our stateroom attendant until the 3rd day of the cruise, it could have been because of the “Do Not Disturb” sign, but we were careful to not have that out during the bulk of the times that they are supposed to be attending to the rooms. While he was taking care of our cabin he really did not seem interested in addressing any personal cares we may have had. Fortunately we didn’t have any. The only other time we saw our attendant was when he gave us the customer satisfaction survey and pointed out his section. I will give him credit, he did take care of the room, but there was no personal touch and it felt like he had his hand out.

We loved the layout of the ship and how easy it was to get from one area to another. We were in the Centrum quite a bit and enjoyed the music that was often played in that area. We also enjoyed playing tag and hide and seek in the ship. Problem was we hid together and no one came seeking us, so we got a little preoccupied at times. It was on one of these trips that we met a delightful young woman named Sandie who was enjoying her first Solo cruise. What a sweetheart, she was delightful and always had a few wolves following around her. She always had a drink in her hands due to the diligence of the wait staff. Proof that a single person can enjoy a cruise without having a wingman. I would just hate to see her bill at the end.

The mandatory muster drill went rather quickly and our muster leader had a great attitude and did what he could to make the whole muster drill more enjoyable then it could have been. It may have been a bit much for him to be doing the shuffle and the twist and the dive but it was interesting to watch him enjoying himself. He also did a fair imitation of the cruise director and the captain. I think I saw him floating off the side of the ship at one point, but that may have been a trick of my eyes.

Dinner in the Aquarius Dining Room was fantastic; we were not disappointed once by the quality of the food or the service that we received there. We ate dinner in the Aquarius every night, breakfast every morning but one, and lunch twice. Our waiter and assistant waiter were very attentive, after the first night (Well, second night, Sandie was a bad influence on Karla, got her drunk and she couldn’t find her way to the dining room with me trying to guide her. She kept insisting that it was out the aft door of the ship, which would have led us into the wake behind the ship. Karla doesn’t drink much and in that one night she drank more then she had in months, Sandie still drank her under the table and I suspect that Sandie might have drank a platoon of Marines under the table.) the waiters called us by name as we were arriving, had our preferred drinks waiting for us and made us feel at home (Unlike our kids who make us feel like we shouldn’t be home.) Where the Windjammer disappointed the Aquarius made up for.

The shows put on in the main theater were enjoyable, however once again we were disappointed by the shortsightedness of some of the staff. There was a large group on the cruise that needed use of the main theatre and the staff changed the show time for the second night’s second show without notifying the guests. From what I understand when the curtain raised there were around 25 people in the audience because most of the audience showed up 15-30 minutes after the show started because they expected the show at 10:45 and it started at 10:15. This portion of the show was supposed to have been incredible with man-eating tigers (It actually ate a man) and an act where the dancers all melded into one writhing pile, that would have been a sight. *wink*

On the last night of the cruise the main entertainment was a pair of comedian jugglers, as far as comedian jugglers go they were good. But the highlight of the show was not the jugglers themselves but their “victim” for one of their acts. The jugglers looked for a kid to join them onstage and had him lay on the stage, they were going to juggle bowling balls over him. As part of the comedy of the act the juggler dropped one of the bowling balls. The boy they picked up sat up, looked at the jugglers, got up, and promptly walked off stage back to his parents. They apparently did not expect this response because they then proceeded to try and convince the boy to rejoin them on stage. This cruise did not have a lot of kids on it and this boy was the only kid in the audience, so they proceeded to bribe him to return to stage. They finally bought him with a bribe of $10. He rejoined them on stage and they had him lay down again and the second juggler told him he would lay down with him. When he laid down he was on the other side of the boy from the other juggler. As soon as he got settled the boy sat up again, they started asking him not to leave, but the boy apparently was not leaving without his money, he got up and laid back down on the other side of the juggler that laid down, putting him next to the juggler with the bowling balls. This caught the jugglers off guard again because they both started laughing and the act couldn’t continue for a good 30 seconds while they got control of themselves. They then performed the juggling bit. When they gave the boy his money they were short a dollar, and the kid had counted it, out loud, then turned to the jugglers and demanded the rest of his money. We know (or at least strongly suspect) that this was not staged because the boy in question ate dinner at the table next to us each night and so at dinner we asked them about it and they were all excited about what had happened and his brother was asked to go to the late show and recreate the performance.

I took advantage of snacks in the Solarium diner a few times and was greatly disappointed by the quality of the food and the attitude of the staff, I think my kids were hiding in the back room again and coaching the staff here. When I asked for something from the Solarium Staff I was made to feel as if my request was an imposition or annoyance, they much preferred to continue chatting with their crewmates rather than serve the guests, just like my kids.

The wait staff & bartender in the Schooner Lounge was attentive of us as guests and we were impressed with how much they seemed to care about our trip. The best bartenders on the ship are Rommel, Dordi, Diego, Orlando, Nestor, Tishar, and Karl. They did a real good job of helping Sandie corrupt my bride of 23 years. The bartenders, waiters, and waitresses live on tips and this group was earning every additional tip they got, some of the other departments on the ship could take lessons from there folk.

The Casino table game staff did not seem to know what they were doing, it seemed as if I constantly had to remind them that they did not pay a bet, did not remove a lost bet, paid my winnings to another player, or they just did not seem to understand their games themselves. My biggest disappointment in the Casino came from the Texas Hold-Em table, which was only opened once during the cruise, was dealt by a dealer that did not seem to understand the game, and had an outrageous rake of 10% to $10 per hand, most poker rooms, including the poker table on Carnival Paradise, only rake $3-$4 per hand and lower that rake when they don’t have a full game this casino seemed to figure that they could take the players for all they could.

Internet Access, both on the ship terminals and wireless was sporadic at best. I often had 5 bars when I was wireless and could not even connect to the ships server to sign in. When using the ships terminals I rarely was able to get past the login screen and was signed out several times when I attempted to go to Gmail or the other forums. This could be viewed as a positive as it limited my time online and I didn’t get to go to any girlies sites. *wink*

Our stop in San Francisco, CA was great. We crossed under the Golden Gate Bridge around 6:15 in the morning and the lighting was great. We have been on that bridge before and it seemed small, but crossing under it is magnificent and a view that many people don’t get. We docked at pier 35, which is one of the older cruise terminals on the west coast. Unfortunately this terminal is more of a warehouse then a processing facility but it did serve sufficiently as a gateway to the city for us. We did not take any excursions but we did disembark and wander along the waterfront to Fisherman’s Wharf and then over to Ghirardelli’s Chocolate Factory (A must-do stop in San Francisco). We then paid for a Metro Day Pass and took the cable car over to Chinatown, which proved to be an interesting walk. We then took the cable car back to Fisherman’s Wharf and the Streetcar back to the ship.

Disembarking the ship in Victoria, BC was a chaotic mess, on previous trips the elevators to the gangway were disabled for the gangway deck so that guests could line up from the upper deck and not be dropped by the elevator in the beginning of the crowd allowing late comers to move in front of other guests that had been waiting patiently for the gangway to be placed and opened for disembarking. Instead guests that did not feel the need to wait in line were allowed to move in front of other guests and were being directed into place by the activities director, this really hit a sore spot for me.

When we arrived at our final port in Vancouver, BC things moved extremely well. While we had to wait for out group to be called we waited in one of the lounges and enjoyed some Seattles Best Coffee served by a delightful young lady who gave me the news that the Vision of the Seas will be taking over the 3-Night/4-Night Baja Itineraries that the Monarch of the Seas currently handles in the next year or so, this means I will get several more visits to the Vision as L.A. makes the best spot for a weekend getaway right now.

While I identified a lot of negatives in this review overall we did enjoy ourselves, but we can see several areas where the crew of the Vision of the Seas could improve if this is reflective of their normal attitude. Hopefully we can schedule a trip on the Vision when it is on a regular itinerary and we can see what a trip then would be like.

In wrap draw is where Texas holdem becomes different from Omaha holdem. Ina situation where you are playing poker and your Omaha hand contains a 6, 7 and 8. And the flop comes as 5, 9 and 3. With these cards you can make a straight with any of the card you hold, a 6, 7 or 8. These will give you 9 outs, one more than an open-ended straight draw, the bets kind you can have in a non-Omaha game such as Texas holdem.

The inside wrap draw is not that strong a hand, and isn’t really a wrap draw. The cards don’t really wrap around, they fit in the middle, but many Omaha players will still call it a wrap, and it does give you more outs than a regular open-ended draw. The chances of making a 9 outer like this are 36.4% if you have two shots at it at the turn and the river.

Another difference of Omaha holdem and Texas holdem is with the pot limit Omaha. One of the main differences is the value of the strong hands skyrocketing in Omaha, while drawing hands in Texas like an open-ended straight draw; usually drop in value so fast. Why do we need bankroll management? Proper bankroll management allows you to play and withstand variance. Variance is what keeps losing poker players coming back because they some times beat the consistent better players. However if you are a winning player you can consistently avoid variance. The question is, how good are you really, how can you avoid the pitfalls that most every winning poker player has faced? When I think about bankroll management there are many factors that come to mind and these are things most players try to avoid. The first question you must ask yourself is what kind of a player am I. Without this knowledge you cannot begin a quest of proper bankroll management. A few other questions you must ask are am I a winning or losing player, why am I playing, do I want to move up in limits, when should I move up in limits, what kind of edge do I have and what size and type of game do I want to play. Let’s examine these factors and then determine what correct bankroll management is for you.

There are many losing players out there approximately 80% of all players playing poker lose money in the long run. That doesn’t necessarily mean these are losing players. Many of these players are undisciplined, careless, and reckless and they don’t know or participate in proper bankroll management. So are you a winning player or losing player? If there is no game that you can consistently beat the rake at then you are a losing player. Sorry, no matter what you do you won’t win money over time until you get better. My advice for you is have fun, play as low as you can humanly stand and you will lose as little as possible. For everyone else let’s continue.

What games can you win at? So, when you play, do you stick to only the games you are a winner at? If you play games that you are currently a losing player at then you need to set aside a budget above your bankroll to play those games to become a winning player at them as well.

What size game do you play? Each offers a different set of guidelines. For example Heads up players are going to win their game more often than any other game but variance is huge because even the best heads up players are only winning at a rate of just over 1.5 to 1. That means the best players still lose a lot. Sometimes they lose in huge stretches due to variance. If you play turbos you need a bigger bankroll than non turbos. Luck is more of a factor.

Let’s look at some numbers and safe guidelines for sit and goes. If you are better than the average winning player then you are going to need less of a bankroll and if you are worse then the average winning player you are going to need more. Determine your average return on investment. Let’s make some assumptions you are an average winning player with an approximately 10% return on investment and you play non turbos. For every $1.00 you invest you get $1.10 back over time. You will need to withstand variance with proper bankroll management and to do so based on the size of game you play you will need to have the amount of buy-ins below to have little chance of going broke:

Successfully stealing blinds in Texas Holdem poker is a secret weapon of many poker pros. However, like anything else this is a learned skill and one that takes as much know-how as it does experience.
To be able to consistently steal blinds from your poker opponents you must master these five insider poker secrets.
1. Be Aggressive
First and foremost you can not win and steal blinds if you’re not an aggressive player. If you are overly conservative and wait for only the best hands and monsters to play you’ll never be able to steal blinds.
On the flip side, if you’re too aggressive and try to steal blinds every time you will get called and risk losing your chip stack. Choose your spots.
2. Reading Your Opponents
You also must have a read on your opponents. When I play it only takes a few hands before I can get a read on my opponents. Sometimes I misread but that is rare.
Once you understand what your opponents do a on a consistent basis you can choose the right time to go over the top or place a big enough bet to get them to fold and steal their blinds.
3. Understanding Your Position
If you’re playing at a full table it is best to steal blinds when you’re on the button. Typically later in a tournament when the blinds are getting larger and more expensive for people to get into the hand they will fold to you. When that happens lay a bet 3-7 times the big blind and watch them fold their blinds to you all day long.
4. What is Your Chip Stack
If you’re the short stack stealing blinds can be your saving grace. At the same time, however, it can be your death.
If you raise big or go all in for five hands in a row someone is bound to call you. So you better have something to play with. However, if you do it periodically chances are you will steal the blinds on a consistent basis.
When you’re the chip leader go nuts! You will be able to bully people around and steal their blinds almost at will. Sure every now and then you’ll get called and beat but you’ll have the chips to gamble with.
5. Are the Blinds Worth Stealing?
Early in a tournament or a sit-n-go game the blinds are so small that they aren’t worth stealing. Wait until the blinds grown larger and can actually make a difference to your chip stake.
Finally, remember if you steal the blinds one time around on a full table you’ll be in good shape. When the blinds start to rise you can start to steal more and really make it beneficial to your chip stack.

One more thing, in holdem poker, it is better to play good starting hands and fold the bad ones.

2. Position Play – In holdem poker, a person’s place and position could help a person win thus being seated in a “late position” is a very huge advantage because one could see all the moves of your opponents before you do. A little observation and a keen eye would help a lot so if ever you are seated in the “late position” when playing holdem poker, better grab the opportunity.

3. Fold – Always remember people that holdem poker is all about the cards and of course, the bet. If the betting round is getting higher and higher but your cards are always on the low and can’t draw to anything, fold faster baby! It’s as simple as that.

Now, enough of the basics of holdem poker and let us talk about strategy, yes, that is right! Even in holdem poker, strategies still exist. First things first, as a player, you should know what type of game would be suited for you, though this may take time, it is worth it. Once you find your game, stick to it! The game starts with each person being dealt two cards; one of those cards is face up and the other one is face down. Once the betting round is over, one more card is dealt face up (Fourth Street) with the same betting options available. Once that betting round is over, Fifth Street is dealt face down to each player and a final round of betting commences. If there are still two players left in the pot after the final round of betting, each player shows their hand and the best five card hand takes the pot.

In the five card draw game, you could not see any of your opponent’s cards and therefore the only thing you had to go on was their body language and betting. Texas holdem is a poker variation that uses the player’s two hole cards and five community cards to make a ranking poker hand. These five community cards are placed face up at the center of the table, and are shared by all the players in order to come up with a five-card poker hand. As you can see, they are called community cards because everybody else in the game can use them to supplement their hole cards in order to make the best hand combination. Because of the presence of community cards in, different players’ hands can often run very close in value, and it is not uncommon for ties to occur.

The community cards are placed on the poker table in this order: three cards at the flop, one card at the turn, and the last card at the river. A round of betting goes down at each of these phases and at what’s called the pre-flop. The pre-flop is when the players’ hole cards are dealt but before the community cards are revealed.

Rank refers to the order of the cards, example Jack, Queen and Ace. Split pot happens when multiple players tie for a hand, then pot is split up evenly among the winners. Kicker refers to the other cards left over after a hand is declared.

The type of suit a player has is not a tie-breaking factor either. If you still have the same five card hand after evaluating the ranks, the pot is split evenly among all the winning players. The winning hand is the highest five card hand. A sixth or seventh card is never used to break a tie.

An example situation where a split occurs; Player A has 4-J and Player B has 3-J. The community card is composed of 10-7-9-8-2. In this case the pot is split because both players can make a jack high straight. Kickers do not apply because the best possible five card hand is the straight.

Another example is that if two players have a pair of aces and the community card is composed of K-10-8-J-3. The pot will be split in this example, unless one of the players can make a flush from the community cards. Therefore this player will be awarded the pot because his card has a better weight when evaluated.

The big decision comes in when the last card is shown, whether you will play or fold. Many times if you call on the turn you will also end up calling the river. The game:

Omaha

It is different from Texas Holdem and almost all online poker rooms have it. In Omaha the players get 4 cards instead of 2 and players must use 2 cards from their hand. In the hi/low version of the game the highest hand splits the pot with the lowest hand. Since you have 4 cards to make a hand in Omaha (instead of the 2 in Holdem) you will often have to make multiple draws to make a hand and you will still have the better odds to win the pot. Many professional poker players prefer Omaha to Texas Holdem since usually a player with the better hand wins the pot.

7-Card stud Poker 7-card stud poker was replaced by Texas Holdem in popularity. This game is very different from Holdem except for the hand rankings. 7-card stud poker can be played as high only or hi/low split.Each player posts an ante and is dealt 2 cards face down and one card face up. The lowest up card must open the hand with either a bet or a check. If a player bets, then the other players must call, raise or fold. There is a maximum of 4 bets (1 bet and 3 raises) in each round. After this initial round is completed each player still in the hand is dealt another face up card. The betting round begins by the player with the strongest poker hand showing. Once this round is complete the hand continues in the same manner with each round played in the same way until each player has 6 cards. The final, 7th card is dealt face down and now there is another betting round.

5-Card Stud Poker

In 5-card stud poker, just like 7-card stud, the lowest card must open hand and the highest hand showing thereafter. There is a betting round after each new card is dealt to each player. Here 2 cards are dealt to each player, one up and one down. Then there is a betting round. After this round there is another card dealt face up proceeding with another betting round. The 4th card is dealt face up and again there is a betting round. Finally, the 5th card is dealt face down and there is a final round of betting.

Joinery is a part of woodworking that involves joining together pieces of wood, to create furniture, structures, toys, and other items. The characteristics of wooden joints – strength, flexibility, toughness, etc. – derive from the properties of the joining materials and from how they are used in the joints. Therefore, different joinery techniques are used to meet differing requirements. Most pre-made cases bought on the market utilize a butt joint. A butt joint is a joinery technique in which two members are joined by simply butting them together. It is also the weakest because unless some form of reinforcement is used, it relies upon glue alone to hold it together. Because the orientation of the members usually present only end grain to long grain gluing surface, the resulting joint is inherently weak.

When ordering a custom chip case, you can specify a dovetail joint. A dovetail joint is a joint technique most commonly used in woodworking joinery. Noted for its resistance to being pulled apart (tensile strength), the dovetail joint is commonly used to join the sides of a drawer to the front. A series of pins cut to extend from the end of one board interlock with a series of tails cut into the end of another board. The pins and tails have a trapezoidal shape. Once glued, a wooden dovetail joint requires no mechanical fasteners.

Another simple and strong joint is the mortise and tenon joint, which has been used for thousands of years by woodworkers around the world to join pieces of wood. Although there are many variations on the theme, the basic idea is that the end of one of the members is inserted into a hole cut in the other member. The end of the first member is called the tenon, and it is usually narrowed with respect to the rest of the piece. The hole in the second member is called the mortise. The joint may be glued, pinned, or wedged to lock it in place.

HARDWARE

Hardware for a poker chip case must also be durable. A variety of hinges and hardware are used in commercial cases, but usually a stamped hinge is used which is the weakest type of hinge. When ordering a custom case, there are a variety of hinges you may request.

A full length piano hinge is a long narrow hinge that runs the full length of the two surfaces to which its leaves are joined. This imparts additional strength to the hinge when a solid wood lid is used.

Concealed Hinges are used for furniture doors (with or without self-closing feature, and with or without dampening systems). They are made of 2 parts: One part is the hinge cup and the arm; the other part is the mounting plate. Also Euro/cup hinge. This gives a cleaner look to the case.

FINISH

One thing to consider when choosing a wooden chip case is to specify that the finish be ‘chip friendly.’  Polyurethane or a non-soluble varnish is an ideal choice, as it does not stain or seep into your chips.  Specifically, avoid any type of Oil finish such as Tung or Danish oil, as these oils can penetrate into the clay chips over time.

CHIP SIZE

Commercial chip trays are usually ‘one-size-fits-all’, so be certain that your chips are appropriately sized for the chip case.  If ordering a custom chip case, be sure to specify the size of your chips. The majority of chips are of the 39mm size.  However, large denomination chips, as well as chips based on the Paulson Inverted Hat and Cane (IHC) fractionals mold, are a larger 43mm size. Casino Chip thickness can also impact how difficult it is too add or remove chips from a tray.  As a chip begins to show signs of wear, edges may become less crisp and the chip becomes a bit thinner.  Over time, chips may begin to wiggle a bit in the case.

Call: When a player matches the prior bet on the table, that action is termed the call.

Community Cards: Face up cards on the table that are shared by all players are termed community cards. Texas Hold’em and Omaha always have community cards. In stud games, a community card is dealt in place of the last down card when too few cards remain in the deck for each player to receive a down card.

Dead Blind: In a situation where you have missed your blinds and wish to re-enter the game before your turn to post the big blind. You must post both blinds and the small blind is termed a dead blind, meaning it does not count towards calling a bet.

Dead Hand: A hand no longer in the game.

Door Card: The first face-up card dealt with the two down cards in 7 Card Stud games.

Down Cards: The face-down cards dealt to a player.

Drawing Dead: This describes the situation when a player is trying to draw a card to complete a hand when there is already a hand that will beat it, even if made.

Drop: To drop your hand when you decide not to go further with your hand; to return your cards to the muck. Same as fold.

Flop: In Texas Hold’em, the set of 3 face-up community cards; the first three cards on the board, all dealt at the same time.

Flush: Any 5 cards in one hand that are all the same suit.

Fold: Withdraw from further participation in the current hand. Also see drop.

Doyle Brunson began his gambling career by taking part in illegal games held in Exchange Street, Texas along with a friend, Dwayne Hamilton. Later on the two of them traveled through Texas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma taking part in bigger games and meeting other professional gamblers like Sailor Roberts and Amarillo Slim. In 2004, he finished 53rd out of 2576 players in No Limit Texas Hold ‘Em Championship as well as winning the Legends of Poker World Poker Tour that earned him another $1 million in prize money. His winnings continued into 2005 when he won his 10th World Series of Poker bracelet. In doing so he tied the score with Johnny Chan who had also won the same series for the 10th time.

Doyle Brunson’s nickname, “Texas Dolly,” is a result of mispronunciation by Jimmy Snyder who was expected to say, “Texas Doyle” when announcing Brunson but read the first name incorrectly. The name got stuck and his friends in the gambling world simply call him Dolly.

Two Texas holdem hands are named after Doyle Brunson. The Ten and Two of any suit is one such hand while the other is known by his name and comprises of the Ace and Queen of any suit. The second hand was named based on a comment in his book that claims Doyle Brunson never plays this hand. Doyle runson now has his own online Poker room called “Doyles Room“.

As a female poker player and resident of Las Vegas, I am always interested in poker tournaments around town specifically for ladies.  Don’t get me wrong – I enjoy playing poker events with both genders, probably even more than exclusively female poker tournaments. But any woman who plays ladies events knows that there is a distinct increase in the “fun” and “camaraderie” level; they have a bit more of a social feel to them.  They may not be where I have made the most money playing, but I have met some of my best friends in Las Vegas through playing ladies poker events.

Most poker rooms in Las Vegas do not offer special ladies poker tournaments.  Especially in this rough economic time, most poker rooms have already cut back their poker tournament schedules to bare bones compared to this time the past few years.  If they do offer them, they are just not well advertised.  So I have gotten used to visiting the LIPS Tour website (www.lipstour.com) to find the occasional event and participating in the WSOP Ladies Event each year.

I happened to stumble upon a website just the other day that surprisingly provided information for some ladies poker tournaments that, until now, I had no idea existed.   The site is called Las Vegas Poker Source and, had I not visited, I would not know that Planet Hollywood has a ladies tournament every Tuesday night at 9pm.  Fiesta Henderson has one every Monday at 5pm.  Excalibur hosts one every Friday night at 8pm.  And as I investigated the site’s “Poker Tournament” tab, I continued to find all sorts of ladies events!

Not only does Las Vegas Poker Source provide this little-known information for me as a female player, but they have every Las Vegas daily poker tournament covered in great detail, including contact information and a write up for each unique poker room, the structures (blind levels, starting chips, etc), and more.  I was also excited to see that they have a “Poker Training” tab on the site.  I’ve been considering getting a poker coach for awhile now, and there are several links to training with some of the top professionals out there, and even some you can do from the comfort of your own home by video.

If you’re complete a poker junkie like me, you can also follow Las Vegas Poker Source on your Twitter account (@LVPokerSource) and receive tweets about a half hour prior to a poker tournament starting.   So now when I’m bored or feeling the itch to go play, I always have some tournament options at my convenience.

Playing a flush draw in Texas holdem can be a profitable decision if the cards are played right. Flush draws are some of the strongest draws you can have on the flop. They play easily and can result in winning you big pots. When you flop a flush draw in limit Texas holdem, it’s either going to be on a two-suited or three-suited flop.

You will always have nine outs to make your flush when you have flopped a flush draw since there are 13 cards of each suit. This is approximately 2-1 (35%) against improving by the river. Your hand is stronger if you have additional draws like a pair, a straight draw, over cards and so forth.

It is important to make a larger-sized bet in betting for the flush draw. Your goal is to convince the other players you have a hand like top pair top kicker or 2 pair. For instance, if you flop 4 cards to the flush, when action gets to you, bet 4-7x the blind. This bet signifies that you have a good hand and are worried about someone catching a flush. It’s a good bet because if you’re playing with good players you will pick up on your bet, they will probably try to bet big when you make your flush, thinking it’s a “scare card” and they can get you to fold.

First: Keep these situations in mind, and remember how to respond to them when playing poker. If you do not have one of the best starting hands, fold. Winning against a skilled aggressive player can be very tough. They’ll back you into corners and force you to make tough decisions – Or get slowly eaten away by their blind stealing. Here we’ll discuss when to re-raise, when to play tight and how to vary your game based on where you are in the tournament.

When to Re-Raise

First off, don’t both defending your blinds in the early game. If a hyper aggressive player wants to steal 30 chip blinds early, let him do it.

When the blinds get worth defending, then it’s time to make a choice. If you’re in the blinds, re-raising him may be a great idea. In fact, you may even want to re-raise more often than not.

Be careful that even if you’re loose with your raises, you play tight post-flop. If he calls your raise, chances are he has something. If you’re holding blanks, don’t go bluffing post flop.

Don’t Get Pushed Around

It’s fine to let go of blinds early, but in mid and late game it’ll really hurt if you don’t start pushing back.

Most players will wait only for good hands to raise or re-raise. Every once in a while, it’s fine to re-raise with nothing. Playing too tight late game against an aggressive player is a recipe for disaster.

Tight Aggressive vs. Tight Aggressive in the Late Game

Late in the tournament, it’s generally tight aggressive players who’ve survived thus far. At this point, you’re likely against several tight aggressive players.

If they’re playing very tight, you can loosen up and try to steal the blinds. Otherwise, at this point you’re playing on reads.

Play a little looser and a little more aggressive pre-flop. Always play tight post-flop. Don’t try to bluff a hand just because you raised pre-flop and got called, especially if you’re short stacked.

Being loose is a great way to combat them being tight. Steal their money from hands they’re not willing to play. On the other hand, getting aggressive and fighting back is the only way to combat them being aggressive.
